After the autonomy of Pakistan (August 1947), the Punjab University was the first institute to build up a three-year single program called B-pharm in 1948 which was reached out to four years in 1978-1979. In 2003, a stage towards further change was seen when the Higher education Commission (HEC) redesigned its B-Pharm program to a five-year Specialist PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy) program.
